Accelerating Commercialization: Zai Lab Reports 39% YoY Growth in Q1 with $87.1 Million Revenue

ECHEMI 2024-05-09

Zai Lab, a leading pharmaceutical company, recently announced its financial performance for the first quarter of 2024 along with key product highlights and company progress. The company recorded a remarkable 39% year-on-year (YoY) growth in product revenue, amounting to $87.1 million.

Financial Performance:

Zai Lab's Q1 2024 product revenue reached an impressive $87.1 million, representing a significant 39% YoY increase. Calculated using a fixed exchange rate (CER), the YoY growth stands at 43%. The surge in revenue can be attributed to the increased sales volume, including the successful market entry of Wei-Jia, a treatment for generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). Additionally, the inclusion of certain products in the Chinese National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL) resulted in reduced sales rebates for distributors.

Product Sales Breakdown:

1. ZeLe (generic name undisclosed): Generated sales revenue of $45.5 million in Q1 2024, reflecting a 7% YoY growth. This growth can be attributed to increased sales in ovarian cancer maintenance therapy and the successful renewal of the drug's indication for adult ovarian cancer treatment and platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer maintenance therapy under the NRDL.

2. Wei-Jia (generic name undisclosed): Recorded sales revenue of $13.2 million in Q1 2024. The drug, used for the treatment of gMG, received positive feedback from both physicians and patients, leading to increased accessibility. Wei-Jia was successfully listed on the NRDL in September 2023, and its sales revenue commenced from Q1 2024.

3. Tumor Electric Field Therapy: Achieved sales revenue of $12.5 million in Q1 2024, representing a 6% YoY decline. Although there was a decline in YoY revenue, the therapy witnessed a significant 49% sequential growth in Q1 2024, indicating a positive trend in patient recovery. It is projected that the overall number of treated patients will continue to recover throughout the year.

4. QingLe (generic name undisclosed): Experienced exceptional growth with sales revenue of $6.1 million in Q1 2024, marking a staggering 367% YoY increase. This growth can be attributed to the drug's inclusion in the NRDL in Q1 2023 for the treatment of advanced fourth-line gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).

5. NewZaiLe (generic name undisclosed): Achieved sales revenue of $9.9 million in Q1 2024, reflecting a remarkable 81% YoY growth. This growth is primarily attributed to the inclusion of NewZaiLe's intravenous injection formulation in the NRDL for the treatment of adult community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). Additionally, the oral formulation for the aforementioned indications was included in the NRDL in Q1 2024.

Future Outlook:

Zai Lab reported a robust research and development expenditure of $54.6 million in Q1 2024, indicating a YoY increase. This investment primarily focuses on the expenses associated with newly initiated and ongoing clinical studies. Despite the increase in expenditure, the company aims to strengthen its commercial operations and drive sales and profit growth in the Greater China region.

Zai Lab's Q1 2024 financial results demonstrate impressive growth, with a 39% YoY increase in product revenue. The successful market entry of Wei-Jia and the inclusion of various drugs in the NRDL have contributed to this achievement. With a strong focus on commercialization and continued investments in research and development, Zai Lab is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities and further expand its presence in the pharmaceutical market.
