Impressive Growth: Vietnam's Pepper Exports Surge by 10.3% in the First 4 Months of 2024

Vietnam, a prominent player in the global spice market, has witnessed a remarkable surge in its pepper exports during the initial four months of 2024. Despite a decline in export volume, the country experienced a substantial increase in export value, primarily driven by a staggering 45.2% surge in pepper exports to the United States. However, the Chinese market witnessed a significant drop of 95% in pepper imports from Vietnam. 

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam's pepper export volume decreased in the first four months of 2024. However, the export value showcased an impressive growth. Notably, Vietnam witnessed a substantial 45.2% surge in pepper exports to the United States, while its exports to China plummeted by 95%.

In April, Vietnam exported various types of pepper, including 23,705 tons of black pepper and 2,540 tons of white pepper, totaling an export value of $116.5 million. Compared to the previous month, both export volume and value increased by 2.2% and 5.2%, respectively. The average export price per ton for black pepper was $4,292, while white pepper stood at $6,034, reflecting a growth of 6.5%.

During the first four months of 2024, Vietnam exported a total of 83,067 tons of pepper, generating an export value of $352 million. While export volume witnessed a decline of 19.4% compared to the previous year, the export value showed a remarkable growth of 10.3%. The average export price per ton for black pepper was $4,065, and for white pepper, it was $5,678.

Asia accounted for 36.2% of Vietnam's total pepper exports. However, in April, Vietnam witnessed a 52% decline in pepper exports to Asian countries. Notably, exports to China experienced a significant drop of 95.2%, while exports to the United Arab Emirates declined by 23%. India emerged as Vietnam's largest export market for pepper, with an export volume of 5,552 tons, representing a growth of 23.9% compared to the previous year. Vietnam also witnessed substantial export growth to markets such as South Korea (157.4%), Pakistan (59.7%), and the Philippines (18.5%).

Vietnam experienced a remarkable 40.6% growth in pepper exports to the Americas, capturing a market share of 30.2%. Among the American countries, the United States emerged as the largest export market for Vietnamese pepper, with an export volume of 22,774 tons, representing a remarkable growth of 45.2% and accounting for 27.4% of the total exports.

Apart from exports, Vietnam also imports pepper from foreign countries to serve its processing and re-export activities. In April, Vietnam imported 4,281 tons of pepper, including 4,085 tons of black pepper and 196 tons of white pepper, amounting to an import value of $15.6 million. The import volume witnessed a growth of 14.9% compared to the previous month.

In summary, Vietnam's pepper exports have exhibited impressive growth, with a 10.3% increase in export value during the first four months of 2024. The surge in exports to the United States has contributed significantly to this growth, while the decline in exports to China poses a challenge for the Vietnamese pepper industry.
