BASF starts up second dispersion production line in Daya Bay, China

ECHEMI 2024-05-31

BASF has announced the commissioning of a second dispersion production line at its Daya Bay site in Huizhou, China. The expansion directly addresses the rapidly growing local demand for high-quality dispersions and reaffirms BASF’s commitment to serving its valued regional customers.

With the increased production capacity, the site will continue to provide comprehensive support to various industries such as coatings, construction, packaging and adhesives. BASF remains steadfast in its commitment to developing new cutting-edge products to meet China’s evolving needs.

Andreas Fechtenkoetter, Senior Vice President, Dispersions Asia Pacific, BASF, elaborated on the company’s strategy to expand production capacity: "Our growth is driven by existing demand and the expansion of our product offering. For example, in addition to architectural coatings, we have expanded our portfolio to meet the needs of the battery industry. Our Licity® and Basonal® Power products are essential anode binders for lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, expanding our production capacity is crucial to meet the growing battery demand in China and across the Asia Pacific region." "This also explains the reasoning behind the name change in March this year from BASF Paper Chemicals Huizhou to BASF Specialty Materials Huizhou, a move aimed at covering a wider product offering."

BASF is committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation in traditional industries, and its groundbreaking proprietary IO-Hybrid technology is an example. "This technology goes beyond the basic functionality of the product to bring more benefits to customers and end users," said Mirian Tiemi Zanchetta-Sbragia, Vice President, Business Management Dispersions, Asia Pacific, BASF. Interior wall paints with IO-Hybrid technology enhance opacity, deliver superior interior design aesthetics, and provide antimicrobial performance within 24 hours. In addition, this innovative technology eliminates the need for customers to add in-can biocides to the paint, thereby reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions."

Since its establishment in 2012, the Daya Bay plant has played an important role in supporting growth in South China. Its second production line broke ground in the fourth quarter of 2022. As of the second quarter of 2024, the new production line is fully operational, further solidifying BASF’s commitment to driving innovation and meeting the changing needs of global industries.
