Hanwha and Ineos study low-carbon ammonia plant in the US

South Korean conglomerate Hanwha and Ineos Nitriles intend to collaborate on studying the establishment of a low-carbon ammonia facility with carbon sequestration in the United States with an annual production capacity of more than 1 million tons.

The site of the plant has not yet been determined, the companies said, and a final investment decision is planned for 2026, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in 2030.

"Our collaboration with Ineos Nitriles aims to strengthen our strategic foothold in the global ammonia market and meet the growing global demand for clean ammonia solutions," said Kiwon Yang, CEO of Hanwha. "Using clean ammonia to produce industrial materials fits well with our commitment to key sustainability principles. This technological advancement will be a key turning point for Hanwha in achieving its vision for a sustainable future," added Kiwon Yang.

Hans Casier, CEO of Ineos Nitriles, said: "This project has the potential to be a significant contribution to Ineos Nitriles' carbon reduction targets for 2030 and net zero emissions for 2050. This project will be an important step towards leadership in the supply of low-carbon acrylonitrile, of which low-carbon-emitting ammonia is a key feedstock."
