Imported Sour Pickles Found to Contain Illegal Preservatives

On June 4, 2024, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a list of imported food items that failed border inspections, which included a shipment of sauerkraut from South Korea found to contain excessive levels of preservatives. 

The kimchi in question was reportedly manufactured by SAMGAK FMC and imported by ISAAC Food Co. LTD., both companies based in South Korea and Taiwan respectively. Analysis revealed that the sorbic acid content in these pickles exceeded the permissible limit of 0.25 g/kg as stipulated by Taiwan's food additive regulations. 

Consequently, the entire batch weighing 720 kilograms has been mandated for either return or destruction. In light of this incident, the Taiwan FDA emphasized the significance of stringent quality control measures and adherence to food safety standards, particularly when dealing with imported goods. 

Importers are urged to thoroughly scrutinize their suppliers and conduct comprehensive testing procedures to ensure compliance with safety regulations while consumers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing products with questionable origins and instead opt for reputable brands carrying appropriate certifications.
