The Brazilian market for biological inputs for the 2022-2023 planting season grew by 52%
According to a survey released by market researcher Kynetec at the BioSummit 2024 summit, the bio-input market for the 2022-2023 planting season in Brazil reached $827 million. Kynetec said the result was a 52% increase compared to the $547 million for the previous 2021-2022 planting season.
Researchers at Brazil's National Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) point out that the country is a leader in the application of all types of agricultural biological inputs. Marco Antonio Nogueira and Mariangela Hungria, researchers at Embrapa, said Brazil's biopesticists market is growing 2.5 times faster than the rest of the world.
According to Cristiano Limberger, Customer Service Manager at Kynetec, the Brazilian bioinput market has undergone significant changes in recent years. When assessing the six-year planting season, it was found that the treated area increased by about 25% on average. Despite the growth, usage is still relatively low, especially in some areas. In other words, there is a lot of room to expand the use of these important products."
Colombian researcher Alba Marina Cotes attributes the increase to the rejection of excessive use of agrochemicals. According to her, synthetic pesticides make various pests more resistant, leading farmers to increase their use, which has a negative impact on production costs. The impact of chemical fertilizers on human health, the environment and production costs has also led to biofertilizers and biostimulants becoming alternatives.
Limberger noted that sugar cane is the crop with the highest frequency of use of biological inputs and has a long history of management, especially for large organisms used to control sugarcane borer. He also noted that in terms of potential, soybeans are the main crop in the Cerrado region of Brazil due to the large area under cultivation and the high adoption rate. In the biopesticide market, biological nematocides are the main products used, especially in corn, where biologics are well suited for pest control, such as corn leaf hoppers, Limberger added. Other crops, such as coffee, cotton, and general horticulture, are also increasing the use of biologics, boosting the potential for continued growth of the bioinputs market.
