Myanmar plans to import 1.6 million tons of fertilizer in 2024-2025
To boost agricultural productivity and meet the needs of the agricultural sector, Myanmar's Urea Fertilizer Procurement and Distribution Steering Committee has outlined plans to import up to 1.6 million tons of fertilizer in fiscal year 2024-2025. This goal underscores the country's commitment to increasing agricultural production and ensuring food security for the population.
Based on the previous year's insights, the Committee intends to carefully assess actual imports and adjust its recommendations accordingly. This strategic approach aims to optimize resource allocation and streamline procurement processes to effectively meet the country's fertilizer needs.
In addition, based on insights provided by the Myanmar Association of Fertilizer, Seed and Pesticide Entrepreneurs, the committee has approved the import of 679,999 tonnes of fertilizers and 10,922 tonnes of pesticides between April and June 2024. This decision will address the immediate needs of the agricultural sector and create an environment conducive to sustained growth. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Myanmar imported 1.047 million tons of fertilizer.
Notably, Myanmar's efforts to strengthen fertilizer imports demonstrate its broader commitment to modernizing and revitalizing its agricultural sector. By prioritizing investments in key inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, Myanmar aims to provide its farmers with the necessary resources to boost crop yields and increase overall agricultural productivity.
As the country deals with the complexity of agricultural development and strives to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, the strategic import of fertilizers becomes a key component of its overall strategy. Through careful planning and execution, Myanmar seeks to harness the transformative potential of agricultural inputs to move the rural economy forward and promote sustainable development across the country.
