The US Environmental Protection Agency has announced the latest registration status of Dicrotofos, Dimethoate, and Tetrachlorvinphose

2024-06-21

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced proposed Provisional Registration Review Decisions (PID) for Dicrotofos, Dimethoate, and Provisional Registration Review decisions (ID) for Tetrachlorvinphose. These decisions are based on ecological and human health risk assessments aimed at ensuring the safety and effectiveness of pesticide use.

Dicrotofos: special pesticide for cotton

Dicrotofos is only used in cotton crops, targeting pests such as thrips, bedbugs, and bug elephants. Based on the 2015 draft Ecological Risk Assessment and updated draft Human Health Risk Assessment, EPA recommends the following actions to mitigate risks:

Reduce the maximum single dose for aerial application.

Update labels to emphasize the importance of worker protective equipment.

Implement drift and runoff mitigation measures to reduce environmental impacts.

Best management practices for enhancing pollinator conservation.

Dimethoate: multi-crop pest control

Dimethoate is widely used in crops such as broccoli, corn, cotton, oranges and tomatoes to target aphids, mites, beetles and other pests. The latest assessment shows that Dimethoate poses a low risk to human health under current labelling protection measures. However, to avoid ecological risks, EPA has proposed the following mitigation measures

 Eliminate some of the less productive agricultural and non-agricultural uses, including: asparagus, conifer nurseries, aspen, pecans, wheat (spring and winter), broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, cauliflower, corn, grapefruit, lemon, orange, pear, soybean, watermelon, honeydew and other brassicas (kale, mustard, turnipish) and nursery-grown ornaments;

Updated labels to include more information about worker protective equipment.

Implement drift and runoff mitigation measures.

Best management practices to enhance pollinator conservation.

Tetrachlorvinphose: Livestock and pet protection

Insecticide is used in domestic animals, pets, garbage dumps and other places to prevent fleas and ticks. The study found a possible risk of neurotoxicity for workers exposed to the substance while handling livestock and feedlots. In addition, runoff from manure application poses ecological risks to birds, mammals and freshwater invertebrates. To this end, EPA proposes the following measures:

It is prohibited to use aerosol methods such as sprayers.

It is forbidden to dump garbage into the sewer.

Increased personal protective equipment requirements.

The label states protection of non-target organisms and water.
