The Approval of Genetically Modified Corn and Food Processing Aids in Australia and New Zealand
In today's rapidly advancing technology, genetically modified (GM) technology has been increasingly garnering global attention and application. Recently, on June 19, 2024, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) officially approved a GM corn and two GM microbe-derived processing aids, injecting new vitality into the field of GM foods.
First, let's look at the much-anticipated GM corn DP910521. This product, carefully developed by Corteva, has been endowed with dual traits of glufosinate-ammonium tolerance and resistance to lepidopteran pests through the expression of Cry1B.34 and PAT proteins. This corn not only can withstand common pest infestations, reducing the use of pesticides, but also can adapt to the application of herbicides like glufosinate-ammonium, further improving planting efficiency. Prior to this, DP910521 has already been approved for food production in Japan and Brazil, as well as for food and feed production in the United States and Colombia, demonstrating its global recognition and application potential.
In addition to the GM corn, two GM microbe-derived processing aids were also approved this time. One contains a Bacillus subtilis protease derived from a genetically modified strain, developed by Danisco Australia. This enzyme has a high protein hydrolysis capability, playing an important role in food processing. It can be used to produce various protein hydrolysis products, such as meat-flavored essences, soy sauce, and seasonings, providing more possibilities for the food industry.
The other processing aid is 2'-fucosyllactose derived from a genetically modified Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, developed by Advanced Protein Technologies in the United States. This substance plays a crucial role in infant formula products. It can mimic certain components of breast milk, providing more nutritional support for infants that is closer to breastfeeding. Furthermore, due to its source from a genetically modified strain, the yield and quality of this substance have been significantly improved, providing more reliable raw material assurance for the production of infant formula.
It is worth mentioning that while GM technology has many advantages, it also faces some controversies and challenges. Some people are concerned about the potential impact of GM foods on human health or the unpredictable damage to the environment. However, after rigorous scientific research and safety assessments, these concerns have not been adequately supported by evidence. In fact, many countries and regions have already approved the production and sale of GM foods, and have achieved good results in practical application.
