In addition to the GM corn, two GM microbe-derived processing aids were also approved this time. One contains a Bacillus subtilis protease derived from a genetically modified strain, developed by Danisco Australia. This enzyme has a high protein hydrolysis capability, playing an important role in food processing. It can be used to produce various protein hydrolysis products, such as meat-flavored essences, soy sauce, and seasonings, providing more possibilities for the food industry.

 

The other processing aid is 2'-fucosyllactose derived from a genetically modified Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, developed by Advanced Protein Technologies in the United States. This substance plays a crucial role in infant formula products. It can mimic certain components of breast milk, providing more nutritional support for infants that is closer to breastfeeding. Furthermore, due to its source from a genetically modified strain, the yield and quality of this substance have been significantly improved, providing more reliable raw material assurance for the production of infant formula.

 

It is worth mentioning that while GM technology has many advantages, it also faces some controversies and challenges. Some people are concerned about the potential impact of GM foods on human health or the unpredictable damage to the environment. However, after rigorous scientific research and safety assessments, these concerns have not been adequately supported by evidence. In fact, many countries and regions have already approved the production and sale of GM foods, and have achieved good results in practical application.
