ECHEMI 2024-07-03

On June 26, 2024, according to the official publication of the European Union, the European Commission formally adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/1756 on June 25, 2024, with the aim of making necessary revisions and corrections to the previous Regulation (EU) 2023/915 on maximum levels of certain contaminants in food. The key points of this revision and correction are summarized as follows:

I. Pursuant to Annex A of the Regulation, Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/915 has been thoroughly revised. Specifically, in the section on mycotoxins in Annex I, the relevant entries for ergot and ergot alkaloids have been updated. Specifically, the note in point 1.8.1 on ergot has been revised to: "This maximum level applies to unprocessed products intended for first-stage processing. If the grains are washed in the presence of ergot bodies, a cleaning step should be performed before washing."  Additionally, in the table in Part 1 (Mycotoxins), the entry for T-2 and HT-2 toxins has now specified a limit of 100 μg/kg for "baked goods containing at least 75% oat milling products."

II. Pursuant to Annex B of the Regulation, necessary corrections have been made to the products and their maximum levels in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/915 regarding ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone.

III. This Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.

IV. This Regulation shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States.
