EU Assessment Of The Application For Renewal Of L-Tyrosine As An Animal Feed Additive

ECHEMI 2024-07-16

On July 12, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced the evaluation of the application for the renewal of the authorization of l-tyrosine as an additive for all animal feeds.

After assessment, the Panel concluded that the additive is safe for target animals, consumers and the environment under current authorization conditions. As this application relates only to the renewal of authorization, there is no need to re-evaluate the efficacy of the additive.

Specifically,EFSA said the additive does not pose a safety hazard to the target animals and there is no food safety risk to consumers. As far as users are concerned, L-tyrosine is not a skin or eye irritant, but the possibility of sensitization cannot be ruled out due to lack of data. When handling this additive, inhalation exposure on contact can occur.

EFSA believes that it is safe to continue to allow the use of L-tyrosine as an animal feed additive under existing authorization conditions. Following this assessment, the EU will further consider the application for renewal.
