The European Union Evaluates The Safety And Efficacy Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Cncm I-1079 As a Feed Additive For Dogs And All Other Canine Animals

ECHEMI 2024-07-16

At the request of the European Commission, the EU Research Group on Additives and Products for Animal Feed (FEEDAP) has published a scientific opinion on the safety and effectiveness of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1079 as a feed additive for dogs and all other canines.

After evaluation, the panel concluded that the additive was safe for the target species, but was unable to draw conclusions about the efficacy of the additive. The details are as follows:

1. Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1079 is considered suitable for safety assessment using the "safety hypothesis" approach. Because the identity of the active ingredient has been clearly established and no other ingredients of the product have raised any concerns, the additive is considered safe for the target species.

2. Since the additive is only used in feed for dogs and other non-food animals, there is no need to evaluate the safety of consumers and the environment.

3. The uncoated additive form has been shown to be non-irritating to the skin and eyes. However, due to a lack of data, no conclusions can be drawn about the eye irritation potential of additives in coating form.

4. Both forms of additives should be considered skin and respiratory sensitizers, and contact through the skin and respiratory tract is considered a risk.

5. The Panel was unable to conclude the efficacy of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1079 under the recommended conditions of use.

The additive is considered safe for the target species (dogs and other canids), but further research and evaluation of efficacy is needed.
