First, let's take a look at what fish oil does. Fish oil is usually derived from the fat of deep-sea fatty fish, primarily salmon and mackerel. These fish come from distant, cold waters such as those of Norway, the Arctic Ocean, and Peru, ensuring purity and freedom from contaminants. Their main components consist of DHA and EPA, commonly known as Omega-3 and Omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids.
In terms of EPA and DHA concentrations, the following are some of the major fish oils on the market today:
- Sardine, herring, mackerel, anchovy blends: 18% EPA, 12% DHA
This is the highest concentration that occurs naturally without the need to artificially increase the EPA/DHA content through chemical synthesis.
- Salmon oil: 10% EPA, 11% DHA
Your salmon oil is most likely from farmed salmon. Farmed salmon are fed antibiotics and an unnatural commercial diet that may include unwanted by-products from other animals and GMOs.
- Cod Liver Oil: 9% EPA, 11% DHA
Cod liver oil almost always contains vitamins A and D, which may increase a dog's risk of vitreous disease.
- Krill Oil: 11% EPA, 5% DHA
Krill is not a sustainable product and has lower concentrations of EPA and DHA.
- Salmon oil: 10% EPA, 10% DHA
For healthy dogs, 100 to 150 mg of EPA and DHA per 10 pounds of body weight per day is recommended, while dogs with health problems may be given a dose of 300 mg per 10 pounds of body weight. One ounce of canned fish with bones, such as sardines, mackerel or pink salmon, usually contains about 300 mg of EPA and DHA.
Is fish oil good for dogs? The answer is indisputable, but it shouldn't be overdone. One should take care when using liquid fish oil products because too much of it may lead to adding unwanted fats and calories into your dog's diet. Increasing inflammation is therefore a real result. It was also noted that high fish oil doses could cause platelets to separate out, which would result in increased bleeding.
Is fish oil good for dogs?
1.Anti-inflammatory effects: EPA and DHA are supposed to be regulatory properties, and they help combat inflammation. Inflammation may be initiated by white blood cells which produce several inflammatory mediators (prostaglandins, leukotrienes, etc.) that localize the tissue inflammation at the site. Henceforth sufficient intake of DHA is a key factor for the well-developed and maintained health of the nervous system in dogs, especially for puppies and elderly ones.
3.Skin, Coat, and Cognitive Function: Besides, there are claims of the effectiveness of EPA and DHA which might be of external behavioral appearances. For instance, hair problems are commonly caused by inflammatory skin conditions, and the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil provide anti-inflammatory effects, which help alleviate such skin conditions, thereby improving the skin conditions and coats. It is also worth noting that many experts suggest there is a possibility that omega-3 fat supplementation has a positive effect on the cognitive function of dogs, especially older ones.
4.Cardiovascular Health: EPA and AHA have an amazing healthy impact on the heart and the blood vessels and they do that by lowering triglycerides in the blood, improving blood circulation, and maintaining the elasticity of the vessels. The features listed above are what give fish oils the potential for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and the management of already existing cardiovascular disease.
