Boehringer Ingelheim Invests in Precision Oncology Therapy
Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading global pharmaceutical giant, recently announced a major investment decision to inject capital into Shenzhen-based biotech upstart Synthetica to accelerate the development of its innovative oncolytic bacterial therapy with the goal of advancing it to clinical trials at an early date. This strategic move not only demonstrates Boehringer Ingelheim's strong determination to drive innovation in oncology treatment, but also heralds a revolution that could upend traditional treatment models.
Synthetica, as a pioneer in the field of biotechnology in China, stands out in the industry with its unique technological advantages. The company uses advanced artificial gene wiring technology to achieve precise manipulation of living bacterial genes, so that therapeutic proteins can be accurately delivered into tumor cells. Using the power of synthetic biology, Synthetica has designed a new class of therapeutic bacteria that release their therapeutic payload only after recognizing a specific tumor microenvironment, ensuring that they only grow inside the tumor and avoid any damage to healthy tissue.
The investment was led by Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund (BIVF) and Singapore's Temasek, It has attracted the active participation of a number of well-known investment institutions such as Lenovo Venture, Fosun Health Capital and ATLATL fund Capital. This demonstrates broad industry recognition of the potential of Synthetica's technology and reflects Boehringer Ingelheim's continued presence in the field of bacterial oncology therapy. Boehringer Ingelheim has already successfully incorporated a bacterial oncology treatment platform into its R&D pipeline through the acquisition of T3 Pharmaceuticals of Switzerland.
Although immunotherapy has made breakthrough advances in the field of cancer treatment, only about 15-20% of cancer patients currently achieve long-term remission from these therapies. In the face of this challenge, Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to making a difference through its comprehensive pipeline of products designed to extend the benefits of immuno-oncology therapies to a broader patient population. By deeply integrating the next generation of anti-tumor bacterial therapies with other immuno-oncology therapies and tumor targeting therapies, the company expects to bring more significant therapeutic effects to more cancer patients, thus taking a more solid step on the road to tumor therapy.
