Merck 's China Business Surges, Keytruda Soars Globally with $14.2 billion-plus in H1 2024 Sales
On July 30, 2024, Merck & Co., a world-renowned pharmaceutical giant, disclosed its financial report for the second quarter of 2024, which showed solid performance growth. This quarter, Merck's total revenue reached $31.887 billion, compared to the same period last year increased by 8%, show the stable operation of the company in the global economic environment. Merck's quarterly revenue of $16.11 billion, up 7% from a year earlier, beat consensus estimates of $15.84 billion and demonstrated the company's leading position in the pharmaceutical industry.
Merck's pharmaceutical business, its main source of revenue, posted revenue of $28.415 billion in the quarter, up 9% from a year earlier. In particular, bright eye of Merck's performance in the Chinese market, China's business income reached $3.534 billion, accounts for 12.4% of its global market share, it shows that companies in the global market layout strategy has made remarkable achievement.
In research and development, Merck has invested $7.492 billion, down 57% from a year earlier. This change may reflect the company's efficient management and prioritization of R&D programs to ensure more efficient use of funds.
Merck's star product, PD-1 antibody drug Keytruda, once again demonstrated its strong market potential. Keytruda sales reached $7.3 billion in the quarter, up 21% year over year and up 5.8% sequentially. Cumulative global sales of Keytruda reached $14.2 billion in the first half of this year. Full-year sales are expected to exceed $30 billion, a forecast based on the continued expansion of Keytruda indications worldwide, including its 40th indication approved in June 2024 for the treatment of primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, further consolidating its leading position in the cancer immunotherapy space.
On the basis of these positive results, Merck raised its full-year sales forecast, up to $63.1 billion to $64.3 billion from $63.4 billion to $64.4 billion. This adjustment was mainly driven by growth in demand for key products, particularly the strong performance of the oncology product line.
