AkzoNobel adds new powder coating technology for electric vehicle batteries

ECHEMI 2024-08-05

AkzoNobel’s Resicoat brand has developed an innovative powder coating technology that provides better electrical protection for electric vehicle (EV) battery systems with just one coat of paint.

The electric vehicle market is seeing a growing demand for high dielectric strength coatings to help improve the safety of battery systems. The company’s powder coatings business has responded to this challenge by creating a solution that allows customers to achieve the desired film thickness with just one coat of paint, helping to improve efficiency and productivity.

The new technology is already available in China for battery system components such as cooling plates, side panels and battery covers (housings).

“We developed innovative technology that meets a clear need within the industry and helps improve safety,” explains Jeff Jirak, Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “This is an important breakthrough that means customers no longer have to spray twice or more to achieve the correct thickness that provides high dielectric strength.”

The technology’s ability to form a uniform film in a single application also means the entire process is more efficient in terms of increasing speed and throughput, reducing man-hours and improving asset utilization.

“Through decades of knowledge and continuous innovation, we have learned that superior powder coatings combined with the right application techniques can provide uniform electrical insulation throughout the life of critical battery system components,” continued Jirak. “This is further evidence of our commitment to supporting our customers through collaboration and product development to create, drive and protect future innovations.”

In addition to improving the safety of electric vehicle battery systems, AkzoNobel’s newly developed single-application technology also resists thermal shock, water immersion and chemical corrosion.

“By working with customers across the value chain, we are in a unique position to understand the needs of the market,” added Jirak. “Our strong global presence means they can benefit from our ability to deliver consistent products and services around the world.”

AkzoNobel’s Resicoat powder coatings range has been helping solve electrical insulation challenges across a wide range of industries since the 1960s. In 2023, a dedicated Resicoat EV powder coatings range was launched, specifically to help improve the safety and performance of electric vehicle components such as battery systems and electric motors.
