EU Assesses an Additive Comprising Endo-1, 4-β-xylanase and Endo-1,3(4)-β-Glucanase for Authorization as a Feed Additive for Fattening Pigs and Turkeys

ECHEMI 2024-08-09

On August 8, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) officially published a detailed assessment report on an application for the renewal of the authorization of a feed additive. This additive consists of two key enzymes, endo-1, 4-β-xylanase and Endo-1,3(4) -β-glucanase, and is designed for fattening pigs, small fattening pig breeds and fattening turkeys.

It is reported that the endo-1, 4-β-xylanase in this additive is derived from the carefully cultivated Trichoderma Richii MUCL 49755, while endo-1,3(4) -β-glucanase is derived from another high-quality strain, Trichoderma Richii MUCL 49754. This combination of double enzymes has injected new vitality into the feed additive industry.

After a rigorous evaluation by the EFSA panel of experts, they unanimously concluded that under the recommended conditions of use, the additive is not only safe for the target animal population, but also ensures the dual protection of consumer health and the ecological environment. It is worth noting that in the review process of the authorization renewal, although the efficacy of the additive was not the focus of this evaluation, the expert panel still gave it a comprehensive consideration.

However, during the assessment, the panel also identified a potential problem. For Avemix® XG 10 formulations based on calcium carbonate + zeolite soil, there is currently insufficient data to support full compliance with the authorization conditions. This discovery reminds us that in the future development and production process, more attention needs to be paid to the accumulation and analysis of data to ensure full product compliance.

Overall, the two formulations of this additive provide feed manufacturers with more diverse options while maintaining excellent safety performance. This will undoubtedly promote the further development and innovation of the feed industry. Next, based on the results of this assessment, the EU will prudently make a final authorization decision to safeguard the healthy development of the feed additives market.
