BASF Explosion Causes Global Vitamin Supply Crisis! At Least 1 Year Needed for Recovery

ECHEMI 2024-08-26

According to the official announcement released by BASF Group on August 21 on its official website, the group has actively shared information on the distribution of its products with customers and made a scientific prediction on the initial time for resuming production in response to the widespread concern about the time required for resuming production.

The announcement explicitly states that once production facilities are restarted, product production will follow a scientific staggered production process. Based on the information currently available, the following production plan is expected: First, priority will be given to the production of fragrance raw materials. The production of some fragrance raw materials is expected to begin no earlier than October 2024, while the production of other products is expected to begin no earlier than November 2024. Following this, the production of vitamin E, vitamin A, and carotenoid products will begin. Based on current predictions, the start-up time for these products is expected to be no earlier than January 2025. After that, BASF Group stated that it would take several months to ensure "normal operation," which includes replenishing global, regional, and local inventory levels to ensure smooth business operations.

Previously, on July 29, 2024, one of the world's major vitamin suppliers, BASF's factory located in Ludwigshafen, Germany, experienced an explosion accident. This sudden event immediately had a widespread and profound impact on the global vitamin supply chain. As the leader in the global chemical industry, BASF plays a crucial role in the vitamin field. This explosion not only affected BASF's supply capacity, but also caused fluctuations in the global market price of vitamins.

We firmly believe that, with the unremitting efforts and scientific planning of the BASF Group, production will be resumed as soon as possible to alleviate the tight supply situation in the global vitamin market and inject new vitality into the development of the global chemical industry. At the same time, the BASF Group will further strengthen its safety management in production to ensure the safety and reliability of the production process and provide more quality products and services for global consumers.
