Global Fish Meal Surges 40%, Fish Oil Rises 10%, Peru's Anchovy Catch Exceeds 2 Million Tons, Ecological Alarm Has Been Sounded!
According to SeafoodSource, analysis by the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization (IFFO) shows that global fishmeal production increased by 40% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, while fish oil production also achieved a 10% year-on-year growth. IFFO noted that this increase was mainly due to a successful fishing season in Peru, which has the largest anchovy fishery in the world.
Peru's Ministry of Production announced in April 2024 that it would open the north-central anchovy fishing zone to a quota of 2.475 million tons. In just 40 days of fishing, the total catch has exceeded 2 million tons. In order to ensure the sustainability of the anchovy biomass, Peru's Ministry of Production has eliminated the anchovy fishing season in the north-central region in 2023.
