Biocoat Receives Patent for Non-PFAS Thermo-Hydrophilic Coating for Medical Devices
Biocoat Incorporated, a developer, manufacturer and applicator of hydrophilic coatings for medical devices, has been granted a patent for “Methods and Apparatus for Lumen Coating.”
The new patent covers a heat-cured hydrophilic coating technology. It is designed for application to the lumen or inner diameter of a tube. The technology is commonly applied to catheters and other medical devices for use in a variety of medical specialties, including cardiology and neurology.
This newly patented technology represents a significant advancement in the field of medical device coatings. It provides the industry with a high-performance, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)-free alternative. As concerns grow about the environmental and health effects of PFAS, Biocoat’s innovation provides a safer, more sustainable solution for medical device manufacturers. It does not compromise on quality or performance.
“This patent demonstrates Biocoat’s commitment to developing innovative and responsible technologies to meet the evolving needs of the medical device industry,” said Jim Moran, President and CEO of Biocoat Incorporated.
"Our unique hydrophilic, non-PFAS coating technology will transform devices that require coating of internal surfaces such as catheter lumens. This innovation will provide medical device manufacturers with coating options that align with global efforts to reduce reliance on PFAS materials."
"The new coating technology offers excellent lubricity, durability and low particle counts while using a lower cure temperature that will not affect common polymer substrates." said Bob Hergenrother, Vice President of Research and Innovation at Biocoat.
"This coating technology has proven its value for more than 30 years and has been used in hundreds of 510k-certified products. By offering a hydrophilic, PFAS-free option, we are supporting the industry's shift to greener, more environmentally friendly materials and contributing to the development of safer medical products for patients around the world."
Biocoat's latest patent solidifies its position as a biomaterial innovator in the field of thermal hydrophilic coatings. They are committed to providing cutting-edge solutions that meet the highest safety and performance standards.
