Canadian Health Department Proposes Adding Two Food Enzymes, M-FAA-24-10 and M-FAA-24-09

On September 6, 2024, Health Canada officially released two important documents, both of which are related to the revision of the food enzyme list. Specifically, in the document numbered M-FAA-24-10, the Health Ministry made a proposal to add a food enzyme called maltose alpha-amylase to the existing list of permitted food enzymes. The enzyme is extracted from a microbe called Saccharomyces cerevisiae LALL-MA+. Once approved, the enzyme will be allowed to be used in a variety of baking products, including bread, flour, whole wheat flour, and a variety of non-standardized baking products. In another document, M-FAA-24-09, the Health Ministry made another proposal to approve a food enzyme called lipase for the production of modified fats and oils. The lipase is extracted from a microbe called Rhizopus oligoides AE-TL. Both of these proposed changes are effective from September 6, 2024.
