EU Approves Animal Feed Additives, Residue Limits Spark Controversy, Risk Assessment Results for Thiacloprid Released!

The European Commission published two regulations on September 16, 2024. The first is Regulation (EU) 2024/2414, which authorises the use of tartar and cedar tinctures as feed additives for all animals, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The additive is classified as a "sensory additive" and a functional group as a "flavoring compound" and is authorized for use until October 6, 2034. The regulations shall come into force on the 20th day after their promulgation.

On the same day, the European Commission also published Regulation (EU) 2024/2412, extending the authorisation period of preparation DSM 23688 as an additive to all animal feed. The additive falls under the category of "technical additives" and the functional group is "silage Additives", with the same authorisation period until 6 October 2034. This regulation shall also come into force on the twentieth day after its promulgation.

On September 17, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced that it intends to revise the maximum residue limits (MRLS) of thiazolone in a wide range of products. The amendment application was submitted by BASF SE and assessed in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 6 of EU Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. After an assessment, EFSA concluded that short - and long-term ingestion of thiazolone residues is unlikely to pose a risk to consumer health based on current agricultural practices.
