An import alert is a preventive measure taken by the FDA against imported foods that may pose a potential risk when they enter the U.S. market. For those companies or products that trigger import alert conditions, the FDA will perform an automatic Detention Without Physical Examination (DWPE). To be clear, automatic detention does not equate to a determination that an export does not comply with U.S. import regulations. For automatically detained goods, they must be inspected by FDA or its authorized laboratory and reviewed and approved by the local FDA branch before customs will allow them to be released and then sold in the U.S. market.
