Avian Influenza, Anthrax, and Bluetongue Disease Rampant: Over 200 Animals Infected, Urgent Epidemic Situation in Europe!
In a statement issued by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) on 19 September 2024, the Federal Ministry of Health of Austria has notified the country of an outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in Neue Sidder, Lakeside, Burgenland. The outbreak was confirmed on the same day, but its origin is not yet clear. Preliminary test results show that three geese have been infected and have died. Austria's Federal Ministry of Health plans weekly updates on the progress of the outbreak.
On the same day, the Food Safety Authority of Azerbaijan also reported an outbreak of anthrax infection in Agjabedi district of the country. The outbreak was also confirmed on 19 September, and its origin is still unclear. Initial test results show that fifty sheep are suspected to have been infected, two of which have died. The Food Safety Authority of Azerbaijan will provide regular updates on the outbreak.
The Danish Ministry of Environment and Food reported an outbreak of bluetongue disease in Denmark on 18 September 2024. The outbreak, which occurred in the municipalities of Athens and Sonneburg, was confirmed on 11 September and is spread by vectors. Initial tests have found eight cattle and 15 sheep suspected to be infected, with one cow and eight sheep already ill. The Danish Ministry of Environment and Food will report weekly updates on the outbreak.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Portugal reported an outbreak of bluetongue disease in the province of Evora on 16 September 2024. The outbreak was confirmed on 13 September and is also spread by vectors. Initial tests showed 157 sheep were suspected to have been infected, of which 15 became ill and one died. Portugal's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will also provide weekly updates on the outbreak.
