SWA Lithium LLC Secures $225 Million Contract Negotiation, U.S. Lithium Resource Dominance Faces Significant Challenge!

On September 20, 2024, Standard Lithium Ltd, a global leader in lithium resource development and technological innovation, was announced. Together with Equinor, a leader in the energy industry, they announced a landmark collaboration: Their joint venture, SWA Lithium LLC, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) over intense competition to enter into negotiations for a contract worth up to $225 million. This achievement not only marks a solid step forward for SWA Lithium in advancing the domestic battery supply chain manufacturing sector in the United States, but also represents a major victory in the history of critical mineral projects in the United States and demonstrates the government's strong determination to strengthen the nation's energy security and economic independence.


The funding, facilitated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chain (MESC) as part of the second wave of funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, is a strong endorsement and support of the SWA Lithium program. The project aims to achieve large-scale production of 22,500 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year using advanced direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology through the construction of the Southwest Arkansas project's Phase I Central Processing Facility (CPF). The setting of this goal not only reflects the depth of the layout of the U.S. government's strategy for self-sufficiency in key minerals, but also indicates that the global lithium resource supply chain pattern is about to usher in new changes.


Since its inception, the SWA Lithium project has attracted extensive attention from the industry for its outstanding performance in technological innovation, resource integration and environmental protection concept. The combination with Equinor has given a strong impetus to the successful implementation of the project. Under the agreement, Standard Lithium will hold 55 percent of the project, while Equinor will hold 45 percent. The cooperation between the two sides is not only limited to the complementarity of capital and technology, but also to jointly promote the grand vision of global energy transformation.


As the project progressed, so did SWA Lithium's ambitions. From the initial Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS) phase to the current target of 45,000 tonnes per year, this leap forward will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the region's economic development. In order to achieve this goal, SWA Lithium is working intensively on the Final Feasibility Study (DFS) and front-end engineering design (FEED) to ensure that the project can be completed on time, on quality and in quantity.


The project is located on 118 acres in rural Lafayette County, south of Louisville, Arkansas. It not only has rich lithium resources, but also has a superior geographical location, which is convenient for the collection and transportation of raw materials. The brine unit will efficiently collect lithium-containing brine from the surrounding land, which will be processed by advanced DLE technology and converted into high-purity battery-grade lithium carbonate. This process not only maximizes the use of resources, but also significantly reduces the environmental impact, demonstrating SWA Lithium's strong commitment to sustainability.


In addition to the economic benefits, the SWA Lithium project will bring significant social benefits to the local community. The project is expected to create approximately 300 temporary jobs during construction and 100 permanent positions once the project is in production. At the same time, through the improvement of infrastructure, the promotion of health initiatives, the establishment of educational partnerships and the implementation of workforce development programs, the project will bring all-round well-being to the local community.

Allison Thurmond, vice president of Equinor's U.S. lithium business, also expressed high praise and expectations for this achievement. "The DOE's support reaffirms lithium's central role in America's energy transition and the commercial value of our project," she noted. We look forward to working closely with the Department of Energy and local communities in Southwest Arkansas to advance the development and utilization of this important resource."
