Nexdot develops invisible varnish to better protect perfume and cleaning formulations
Nexdot, a company focused on the application of quantum dots research, has launched a new varnish for glass bottles to protect perfumes from harmful UV rays. This innovation allows the use of fewer additives in formulations without compromising quality, and the product is marketed by Stoelzle Parfumerie & Cosmétique under the name Lumi Coat.
The molecules used by perfume and cosmetics manufacturers, especially natural ones, degrade rapidly when exposed to UV radiation. For example, without protection, perfumes lose their color and their olfactory characteristics change after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Therefore, formulators usually have to add UV filters and other stabilizers to their product formulations to protect them.
Drawing on more than 10 years of research on quantum dots, Nexdot has created an innovative varnish in which nanocrystals are integrated that are able to absorb UV rays A, B and C without any impact on the visible spectrum. As a result, bottles coated with the varnish remain completely transparent, maintaining complete optical clarity.
While UV varnishes are sometimes used to reduce UV exposure, they are not effective enough to significantly reduce additives in formulations. Nexdot’s technology, called UVltimate, blocks UV rays with industry-leading efficiency, providing the highest level of UV protection available.
Once applied to the bottle, this advanced protection prevents color change and fragrance degradation, eliminating the need for traditional UV additives such as avobenzone and supporting cleaner, more sustainable formulations. It reduces the need for stabilizing molecules such as UV absorbers, dyes and preservatives, in line with the growing demand for “clean beauty.”
Successfully tested on more than 1,500 bottles in an industrial setting at Stoelzle Parfumerie & Cosmétique in France, Nexdot’s UVltimate solution is adaptable to any bottle shape and compatible with other decoration techniques. Lumi Coat integrates seamlessly with a variety of glass packaging designs, providing brands with flexibility while ensuring the highest level of UV protection.
