Coal Production Surges by 4.4%! September Data Reveals Potential Crisis in China’s Coal Industry
Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Friday revealed that China's coal industry showed positive development in September after safety inspections carried out earlier this year. Specifically, coal production in the month achieved a significant increase of 4.4% year-on-year, and was accompanied by the recovery and operation of more capacity in the coal chemical industry.
Coal production rose to 414.46 million tons in September from 396.55 million tons in August, showing strong growth momentum, according to statistics. In this regard, professional analysts of Galaxy Futures pointed out that this growth trend is mainly attributed to the significant improvement of coal mine safety conditions, which provides a strong guarantee for the recovery and expansion of production activities.
It is worth mentioning that Shanxi Province, as a major coal province, its coal mine safety supervision bureau report shows that through strengthening safety inspections in the first half of this year, the number of coal mine accidents and deaths in the province achieved a significant reduction of 42% and 40%, respectively. This positive result not only enhances the safe production environment in mines, but also enables mining enterprises to resume and expand production scale to better meet market demand.
Shanxi Province will undertake 29% of the country's coal mining tasks in 2023, and its strict control and active actions in production safety are of great significance to ensure national energy security. It is worth noting that the province also took measures to control excess production earlier this year, as an important measure to improve the safety level of coal mines.
Taking a closer look at the government's revised data, China's total coal production in the first nine months of this year reached 3.48 billion tons, a steady increase of 0.6 percent year-on-year. In addition, the National Bureau of Statistics also revealed that China's coal-fired power generation, which uses coal as the main fuel, rose 8.9 percent year on year to 545.1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in September, reflecting a significant increase in coal use and further highlighting the important role of the coal industry in the country's energy mix.
Galaxy Futures analysts further analysis pointed out that with the completion of maintenance work of some coal-based methanol, urea, PVC and other chemical production capacity and gradually resumed production, the capacity utilization rate of relevant enterprises is also gradually improving. This trend is expected to inject strong momentum into China's medium-term growth.
Analysts at Galaxy Futures predict that China's coal production will continue to increase for the rest of the year, and expect the total annual output to reach 4.68 billion tons in 2024, up about 0.5 percent from last year's record output of 4.66 billion tons. The forecast shows that China's coal industry will continue to play an important role in ensuring national energy security and promoting stable economic growth.
