Sherwin-Williams Third Quarter Earnings Report: Sales Growth of Only 0.7%, Yet Net Profit Surges by 5.91%! Astonishing Growth Amid Market Volatility

ECHEMI 2024-10-24

On October 22, 2024, Sherwin-Williams, a leader in the global coatings industry, announced its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2024. This report not only demonstrates Sherwin-Williams' solid performance in a complex and volatile market environment, but also reveals the company's firm confidence and positive outlook for future development.

In the third quarter, Sherwin-Williams' net sales rose 0.7 percent to $6.163 billion. Although this increase is not significant, it is particularly difficult in the context of global economic volatility and increased competition in the industry. In terms of net profit, Sherwin-Williams performed even better, reaching $806 million (about 5.41 billion yuan), an increase of 5.91%. This growth is not only due to the company's effective cost control and operational efficiency, but also reflects the strong competitiveness of Sherwin-Williams in the high-end coatings market.

Commenting on the third quarter results, Heidi G. Petz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sherwin-Williams, said, "Despite continued volatility in the market demand environment, Sherwin-Williams delivered growth in sales, gross margin, EBITDA and adjusted diluted net income per share. Strong cash flow in the third quarter enabled us to return $631 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. We also chose to invest early in the quarter as unprecedented long-term opportunities continue to emerge in an increasingly uncertain competitive environment. We are very confident that our current short-term investments in stores, sales and technical representation, expanded services and digital capabilities will contribute to sustained and profitable above-market growth." We expect selling and administrative expenses to slow in turn, leading to low - to mid-single digit growth in the second half, as expected."

Petz also noted that Sherwin-Williams' growth in the Paint Store Group during the quarter was driven primarily by high single-digit growth in the protective and Marine businesses, with the company's previous investments in residential repainting continuing to drive single-digit growth in a depressed market. New residential business also grew at a similar pace to expectations. At the same time, the group also announced a 5% price increase from January 6, 2025.

In the Consumer Brands Group and the Performance Coatings Group, Petz said sales in the Consumer Brands Group declined due to continued weakness in the DIY market in North America. However, the Performance Coatings Group's packaging business grew at a high single-digit percentage and continued to regain market share. In addition, the coil and industrial wood businesses also achieved growth.
