Covestro adds to Asia Pacific! Partially bio-based coating raw material production line landed in Foshan, China
Covestro has further advanced its localization and sustainability efforts in the Asia Pacific region and started producing a partially bio-based coating raw material that is widely used in construction and infrastructure applications.
Following the launch of Desmophen® CQ NH polyaspartic resin in Europe in the third quarter, Covestro began to increase the production of Desmophen® CQ NH polyaspartic resin at its plant in Foshan, China. This local production shortens delivery times and ensures a stable supply for regional customers seeking sustainable solutions.
Desmophen® CQ NH polyaspartic acid contains at least 25% bio-based ingredients, which helps reduce carbon footprint and maintains the high performance of its fossil-based predecessor. These resins have excellent chemical resistance and weathering resistance, ensuring long-lasting stability and protection in different environments.
The fast curing properties of the resin improve construction efficiency, allowing for faster resumption of operations. In addition, its formulation minimizes VOC and odor emissions, helping to reduce environmental impact. Key applications include wind turbine coatings, floor coatings and grouting.
Notably, the Foshan plant is fully powered by renewable energy from offshore wind farms in China, further reducing the product’s carbon footprint.
Currently, around 75% of Covestro’s products sold to the coatings and adhesives industry in Asia Pacific are produced locally, reinforcing the company’s commitment to strengthening manufacturing in the region.
Desmophen® CQ NH is part of Covestro’s Pasquick® fast-curing coatings technology and can also be paired with other partially bio-based products in the Pasquick® technology portfolio, such as Desmodur® CQ aliphatic polyisocyanates. Desmophen® CQ NH can be used in industrial coatings for building and infrastructure applications.
Anand Khot, Senior Vice President, Coatings and Adhesives Asia Pacific, Covestro, said: “Covestro is committed to driving the circular economy, including expanding the use of alternative raw materials and transitioning to renewable energy. Local production of partially bio-based Desmophen® CQ NH demonstrates our commitment to establishing a stable and efficient supply network in Asia Pacific to quickly adapt to market needs and support our customers and end-users’ requirements for increased circularity.
