Novo Nordisk's Expansion Triggers Labor Competition in Denmark: 32,000 Employees Increase by 75%
In recent years, the rapid expansion of Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has not only driven national economic growth but also sparked intense labor competition. As of September this year, Novo Nordisk has reached approximately 32,000 employees in Denmark, an increase of 75% compared to three years ago.
Small Businesses Struggle to Compete on Salaries, Many Shut Down
The high salaries and career development opportunities offered by Novo Nordisk have made it the preferred choice for many talents. As a result, numerous small businesses have found it increasingly difficult to survive. For instance, the Flint Auto repair shop in Kallenborg had to close its doors after employees continuously left for Novo Nordisk.
The construction industry has also been severely impacted, with several companies forced to abandon orders due to significant staff turnover. The healthcare sector faces similar pressures; a local hospital’s clinical microbiology department has lost about 10 employees in the past two years, making it challenging to recruit new staff. Some manufacturing companies have even been compelled to relocate production lines overseas to alleviate labor shortages.
Labor Tension in Kallenborg, Municipal Departments Affected
Novo Nordisk's large-scale expansion in Kallenborg has profoundly affected the local labor market. The company now employs around 4,500 people in Kallenborg, accounting for a quarter of the local population. The town mayor has noted that even city government staff members are leaving for jobs at the pharmaceutical company.
Novo Nordisk's recruitment needs are not limited to scientists and healthcare professionals; talents from various fields, including mechanics, teachers, and military personnel, are also being attracted.
Government and Businesses Implement Measures to Alleviate Labor Shortages
To address the talent shortage, the Danish government has implemented several policies, including relaxing restrictions on recruiting overseas talent, extending tax incentives for foreign employees, and planning further reforms to attract more foreign labor. Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration Kaare Dybvad Bek emphasized the importance of attracting and retaining international talent in the context of a low unemployment rate.
Additionally, to retain employees, some businesses are expanding recruitment efforts by increasing salaries, offering training and promotion opportunities, and implementing remote work options to mitigate talent loss.
Novo Nordisk's rapid expansion undoubtedly injects vitality into the Danish economy, but it also poses significant challenges for local businesses and government agencies in human resource management. Finding a solution that balances economic growth with labor market stability has become a pressing issue for Denmark.
