China Announces Latest Tariff Adjustment Measures! Import Tariffs on Ethane, Some Recycled Copper and Recycled Aluminum Raw Materials are Reduced
The Ministry of Finance announced tariff adjustment measures on the 28th. Starting from January 1, 2025, China will reduce import tariffs on ethane and some recycled copper and aluminum raw materials. These adjustments are aimed at increasing imports of high-quality products, expanding domestic demand, and supporting China's ongoing efforts to increase economic openness.
The Ministry of Commerce said that as part of these adjustments, the import provisional tariffs on a total of 935 commodities will be lower than the most-favored-nation rate. Among these changes, the reduction of tariffs on ethane and certain recycled copper and aluminum materials is seen as part of China's strategy to promote green and low-carbon development. The move is in line with China's broader sustainable development goals, including reducing carbon emissions and supporting a circular economy.
The tariff cuts will apply to a range of production, including cyclic olefin polymers, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers, and automatic transmissions for special vehicles such as fire trucks and maintenance vehicles. These adjustments reflect China's commitment to improving its high-tech manufacturing capabilities and improving the efficiency of its emergency and industrial vehicles. At the same time, tariffs on specific commodities will rise. For example, molasses and sugar-containing premix powder.
In addition, China will also reduce tariffs on goods that are essential for medical and technological advancements, such as sodium cyclosilicate, viral vectors for CAR.T cancer treatment, and nickel-titanium alloy wires necessary for surgical implants. These measures are aimed at promoting innovation and increasing access to cutting-edge medical technologies, in line with China's healthcare goals.
In addition, the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement will take effect on January 1. As part of the bilateral trade arrangement between the two countries, tariffs will be further reduced. The Ministry of Finance emphasized that the agreement will ensure smoother trade between China and the Maldives, which may bring new opportunities to industries in both countries.
In summary, these tariff adjustments (including tax cuts and tax increases) are part of China's broader strategy to encourage imports of high-quality sustainable products and stimulate domestic economic growth and innovation. By adjusting import tariffs across a wide range of industries, China is working to foster a more open, competitive and environmentally responsible economy.
