Rohm Chemical Alliance Promotes PMMA Recycling of 10,000 Tons

ECHEMI 2025-01-15

On January 7, Rohm Chemical announced the establishment of an alliance with partners aimed at promoting the circular economy of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in Europe. This initiative marks an important developmental phase for Rohm Chemical.

Mr. Han Peide, Chief Operating Officer of Rohm Chemical, emphasized that the formation of this alliance is a significant milestone in the company's development. Companies participating in the alliance include Pekutherm from Germany, NEXTCHEM under the MAIRE Group in Italy, Rohm Chemical from Germany, and POLYVANTIS. This action sends a clear message to the entire plastics industry: these four companies will integrate their respective strengths to jointly promote the development of the PMMA circular economy in Europe. Mr. Han also pointed out that promoting the development of the circular economy is one of the core goals of Rohm Chemical's and POLYVANTIS's sustainable development strategies. To achieve this goal, both companies need to establish close cooperative relationships with other companies.

Currently, Rohm Chemical, through its proTerra sub-brand, has already provided various products to customers that reduce carbon footprints. These products are made by adding recycled PMMA and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Thanks to this collaboration, more PMMA materials can now be processed through mechanical and chemical recycling methods and return to the market as MMA and PMMA of near virgin quality.

Rohm Chemical believes that the biggest challenges in developing the circular economy are the lack of infrastructure, logistics capabilities, and sufficient economically viable recyclable PMMA. As the logistics partner in the alliance, Pekutherm is committed to solving these issues. As Europe’s largest PMMA recycling specialist, Pekutherm has an annual sorting capacity of 10,000 tons. The subsidiary of NEXTCHEM, MyRemono, is responsible for receiving the remaining PMMA.
