Wuxi AppTec's D&M Expenditure to Double by 2025
Recently, WuXi AppTec announced at the JPM Conference that its robust operating cash flow, driven by business development and efficient operations, will be dedicated to advancing its global capacity and capabilities in CRDMO (Contract Research, Development, and Manufacturing Organization). The company anticipates that its D&M capital expenditures will double by 2025.
WuXi AppTec's integrated, end-to-end CRDMO model encompasses the entire drug development process, including Research (R), Development (D), and Manufacturing (M). This comprehensive approach creates a seamless connection across all lifecycle stages of new drug development. The model functions as a funnel, where innovative drug molecules flow from the R phase to the D phase and finally to the M phase, gradually accelerating throughout the process and effectively bridging the entire industry chain.
According to materials disclosed during the JPM Conference, WuXi AppTec currently has six sites under construction globally, with five of these facilities equipped with both D and M capabilities. As of the end of the third quarter of 2024, the company reported a backlog of orders amounting to 43.8 billion yuan. Since 2018, WuXi AppTec has achieved a compound annual growth rate of 35% in its order backlog, with D&M orders growing at an impressive 55%, increasing their share of total orders from 35% to 70%.
In the D&M segment, WuXi AppTec is well-positioned to support ongoing drug development, thanks to its capabilities and production reserves. The company offers comprehensive innovative technologies, including API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) production, formulation capabilities, and advanced techniques like biocatalysis. This enables the development of complex molecules at any stage, leveraging economies of scale to improve speed, efficiency, and success rates.
WuXi AppTec has shown significant strength in the small molecule sector. According to the company’s quarterly report, its R phase platforms successfully synthesized and delivered over 450,000 new compounds in the past year, marking a 7% increase year-on-year. The number of projects in small molecule process development and production continues to rise, with a total of 3,356 small molecule pipeline compounds and 915 new molecules added in the first three quarters, including 20 new projects in commercialization and Phase III clinical trials.
Analysts highlight that the biopharmaceutical industry is thriving, fueled by a heightened global health consciousness and sustained demand for biopharmaceuticals. As a CRO (Contract Research Organization), WuXi AppTec stands to benefit from this industry trend. Although the company has experienced fluctuations in performance, it demonstrates a steady growth trajectory overall.
In addition to maintaining solid growth in its traditional business, WuXi AppTec is actively pursuing new business expansions and strategic upgrades. The company has enhanced its CTDMO (Contract Testing, Development, and Manufacturing Organization) service platform, improving service efficiency and quality through resource integration and process optimization. Furthermore, WuXi AppTec is broadening its capabilities related to new molecular types, continually expanding its service offerings to meet the diverse needs of clients. These initiatives are expected to have a positive impact on the company’s performance moving forward.
