Mondelez Warns of Price Hikes as Health Initiative Forces Product Reformulations
Mondelez International, the maker of Oreo and other popular snacks, is bracing for significant price increases due to new cost pressures from the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative led by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. CEO Dirk van de Put revealed that this movement may necessitate reformulating key products like Ritz crackers and Chips Ahoy cookies.
Kennedy's agenda targets food additives and ultra-processed foods, pushing Mondelez to swap out ingredients and food dyes currently in use. Following Kennedy's recent swearing-in, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a commission focused on addressing chronic illnesses and childhood diseases.
Van de Put noted that because Mondelez operates in both the U.S. and Europe, adapting recipes to comply with MAHA would be "relatively straightforward." However, he cautioned that these necessary changes will incur costs, which will ultimately lead to higher prices for consumers at grocery stores.
The U.S. is still grappling with historically high food inflation stemming from COVID-19-related supply chain issues. Prices for essential ingredients like eggs, cocoa, and coffee remain elevated due to various factors. Van de Put acknowledged that it is challenging to raise prices during this period, stating, "I do expect it will take us a few years to work our way through this."
Consumers should prepare for chocolate prices to rise by 30% to 50%, largely due to a supply crisis in Africa affecting Mondelez’s Cadbury and Milka brands.
