PPG Reports 2024 Sales Decline to USD 15.845 Billion Amidst Market Challenges and Strategic Restructuring

ECHEMI 2025-02-25

PPG Industries recently disclosed its 2024 annual report, revealing a net sales total of approximately USD 15.845 billion, marking a 2% decline from the previous year. This decrease is primarily attributed to lower sales volumes, adverse foreign exchange impacts, and asset divestitures. Despite a downturn in demand for automotive OEM coatings, industrial coatings, and architectural coatings in Europe, the company experienced record sales in aerospace coatings, bolstering overall performance.

The pre-tax profit stood at USD 1.852 billion, an increase of USD 162 million year-over-year, driven by reduced raw material costs and savings from restructuring, although offset by inflation in indirect costs and declining sales volumes. PPG reported USD 1.4 billion in operating cash flow, demonstrating resilience amid a challenging economic environment.

Looking ahead to 2025, PPG plans to assess the necessityof price increases in response to ongoing macroeconomic pressures. The company aims for organic sales growth in the low single digits, particularly benefiting from strong demand in aerospace coatings and infrastructure spending in transportation solutions.

The annual report detailed the performance of PPG's three main business segments. The Architectural Coatings segment reported sales of USD 3.921 billion in 2024, down 2.5% compared to the previous year, while the Performance Coatings segment grew to USD 5.237 billion, reflecting a 2% increase. However, the Industrial Coatings segment faced a more significant challenge, with sales declining 5.7% to USD 6.687 billion.

On the workforce front, PPG reduced its global employee count to approximately 46,000, down from 53,000 in the previous year, primarily due to the divestiture of its North American architectural coatings business. This strategic move is part of PPG's efforts to streamline operations and enhance profitability.
