€1 Billion Green Hydrogen Project Set to Transform Energy Landscape
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have announced a significant investment of over €1 billion to establish two large-scale electrolyzer projects in the Netherlands. These initiatives aim to provide renewable hydrogen to TotalEnergies' refineries in Vlissingen and Antwerp, Belgium, and are expected to produce a total of 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
Under one agreement, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide will form a 50-50 joint venture to construct and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near Vlissingen. This project is projected to generate 30,000 tons of green hydrogen each year, primarily for use at the refinery, and is expected to commence operations by 2029, reducing CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons annually.
The second agreement pertains to Air Liquide's previously announced 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project located at Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. Air Liquide will lead the construction and operation of this facility, which is anticipated to produce 23,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen yearly, with 15,000 tons designated for TotalEnergies.
This strategic collaboration marks a substantial step towards cleaner energy solutions, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions in the refining sector. With global energy demands evolving, this project emphasizes the importance of renewable energy in achieving sustainability goals.
