€7.6 Billion Green Hydrogen Agreement Signals Shift to Clean Energy

ECHEMI 2025-03-06

Recently, Longi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. signed a €7.6 billion green hydrogen agreement with the Nigerian Federal Government and APPL Hydrogen Limited (AHL). This groundbreaking project is set in the free trade zone of Ataburikon in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, strategically located near major industrial hubs.

The initiative will leverage Longi’s N-type TOPCon photovoltaic modules alongside advanced alkaline electrolysis technology. The aim is to create an integrated production chain for "photovoltaic hydrogen and chemical conversion." Upon completion, the project is expected to generate 1.2 million tons of green hydrogen derivatives annually, converting them into green methanol for export. This will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 5 million tons each year.

Idara Ekpo, Chief Vision Officer of APPL Hydrogen, highlighted the project’s closed-loop water treatment system, which can save 60% of water compared to traditional fossil fuel production methods. The project will also include the establishment of a 200 MW solar power station and a hydrogen production system to maximize renewable energy utilization.

Longi’s President, Li Zhenguo, emphasized the company's commitment to hydrogen and ammonia technology, integrating solar energy with storage solutions to broaden off-grid applications and lower green hydrogen costs over the next 25 years.

This agreement marks a significant step for Nigeria in its transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, adhering to global best practices for energy transformation. It also reflects the growing trend of Chinese companies securing hydrogen projects abroad, contributing to a sustainable future.
