Tesla Expands Storage Capacity with New 1.6 Million Square Foot Facility in Texas

ECHEMI 2025-03-14

On March 5, reports revealed that Tesla has reached a tax incentive agreement with Waller County, paving the way for the construction of a massive new energy storage facility near Houston, Texas. This project, located in the Empire West Industrial Park near Katy, will cover an impressive 1.6 million square feet. In addition to the existing structures, the site will feature a 600,000 square foot distribution facility with some manufacturing capabilities.

This new Megapack factory is expected to generate between $8 billion and $10 billion in annual revenue. For context, California's energy storage facility spans 600,000 square feet, while the Shanghai facility covers 900,000 square feet. This means Tesla's new Texas facility will be larger than both combined!

Under the agreement with Waller County, Tesla will benefit from a series of tax reductions, including $44 million for facility improvements and $150 million for manufacturing equipment. Additionally, a new distribution facility valued at $31 million will be constructed, with approximately $2 million allocated for Tesla's distribution equipment and building upgrades.

The factory will continue the production of Tesla Megapacks, crucial for advancing energy storage technologies that enhance grid reliability and renewable energy integration. Although Tesla has not disclosed specific capacity details, its existing facilities in California and China can produce 40 GWh of Megapacks annually.

Since 2015, Tesla has launched home batteries like Powerwall and large-scale commercial storage systems like Megapack, targeting both residential and industrial energy markets. Tesla's energy storage products are now present in over 65 countries, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors of the company.

In 2024, Tesla's energy storage business achieved revenues of $10.086 billion, marking a 67% year-over-year increase. The total installed capacity reached 31.4 GWh, a 113% increase from the previous year. Notably, the fourth quarter of 2024 saw record installations for both Powerwall and Megapack, totaling 11.0 GWh, a staggering 244% increase year-over-year.

Despite impressive growth, Tesla's energy storage expansion has been hampered by capacity constraints. CEO Elon Musk has frequently highlighted the surging demand for storage solutions, which the company struggles to meet. Since late 2022, delivery times for Tesla's storage systems have remained around five quarters.

Musk has also asserted that Tesla's fixed energy storage business is on track to ship 100 GWh annually. Currently, the production capacity across Tesla's Shanghai factory, Delaware, and California totals 80 GWh for Megapacks. With the upcoming facility in Texas, the company is on the verge of achieving Musk's ambitious target of 100 GWh in annual shipments.
