LyondellBasell Dalian APS Plant to Use 100% Renewable Electricity

ECHEMI 2025-04-15

LyondellBasell (LYB) has entered into a one-year agreement to use 100% renewable electricity at its manufacturing facility in Dalian by 2025. This makes the Dalian plant the first LYB Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS) plant in Asia to operate entirely on renewable energy.

By using 100% renewable electricity, LYB expects to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 5,000 tons in 2025, equivalent to removing approximately 1,000 passenger cars from the road for a year. This move will support the Chinese automotive industry in reducing its product carbon footprint (PCF) and integrating more sustainable manufacturing solutions.

“This achievement reflects our commitment to providing more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Rolf van Beeck, Vice President, APS and AfMEI, Asia Pacific, LYB. “As demand for energy-efficient vehicles grows, we are not only providing high-performance automotive materials, but also working with customers to drive a more sustainable future.”

This shift is made possible by China’s green electricity trading program, which leverages Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) and Green Electricity Consumption Certificates (GECCs). By procuring renewable electricity at a lower cost than non-green energy sources, LYB is demonstrating how sustainable solutions can be cost-effective. The Dalian plant’s power mix consists primarily of wind and solar photovoltaics, further reinforcing the company’s sustainability strategy.

Power procurement decisions after 2025 will be evaluated based on cost, availability and overall business strategy, in line with LYB’s commitment to balancing sustainability and operational efficiency.
