2.36 Billion Dollar Gotion EV Battery Project Halted Amid Legal Battle
A year ago, folks in Green Charter Township were talking about a battery plant the way some towns talk about a new factory saving the local economy. Now, that same project has hit a wall, and nobody seems quite sure whether it’s coming or going. Gotion Inc., the company behind the plan, has pulled its environmental permit for the time being, and everything is waiting on a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
The deal once sounded straightforward enough: a $2.36 billion investment, a modern EV battery plant, and roughly 2,350 jobs in a rural Michigan community that could use the work. Production was originally expected to begin in early 2026. Then the 2023 local elections happened. A new township board came in, took a hard look at the agreement, and in March 2024 chose to back out of the previous administration’s support. Gotion said the township couldn’t simply change its mind on a signed deal and filed suit. A federal judge later ordered the township to stick to the original agreement, at least for now, though the board has appealed that ruling.
Talk to residents and you’ll hear a mix of hope, suspicion, and genuine confusion. Some people were drawn to the promise of jobs and growth. Others worry about what a project of this size might mean for the water, the land, or the town’s character. A number of voices have zeroed in on the company’s ties to China, a topic that has turned heated at community meetings.
For the moment, everything is frozen while the appeals court considers the case. No permits moving, no shovels in the ground—just a community stuck waiting for someone in Cincinnati to decide what comes next. Whether the project restarts or fades away will depend on that ruling. Until then, all the township can do is wait, argue, and wonder what might have been.
