White Hydrogen Could Be Worth 92 Billion Dollars But the Clock Is Ticking
As the race toward clean energy intensifies, naturally occurring white hydrogen is emerging as a surprising contender in the global energy game. This geological form of hydrogen, generated deep underground from water-rock reactions, is gaining attention for its renewable potential and minimal carbon footprint.
Unlike green hydrogen, which requires costly electrolysis, white hydrogen is produced by nature itself. Since its first discovery in Mali in 2012, interest has steadily grown, especially as new reserves surface in France, the U.S., and Canada. A recent find in France’s Moselle region revealed an estimated 92 million tons, potentially worth $92 billion, underscoring its vast but largely untapped promise.
Leading energy players like BP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, and Gazprom are now backing white hydrogen exploration. Even tech billionaires are getting involved—Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos have poured over $400 million into Colorado-based startup Koloma, which reported a major discovery in Kansas.
Still, enthusiasm is tempered by technical and logistical hurdles. White hydrogen is often scattered in unpredictable geological formations, and there’s a lack of regulatory clarity around how to extract and manage it safely. Drilling projects remain limited, with only a handful of companies actively pursuing tests or pilot wells.
Experts caution that 2026 will be pivotal in determining the scalability of white hydrogen as a commercial fuel. Until then, the industry faces a balancing act: pushing innovation forward while managing scientific unknowns.
Despite these challenges, the white hydrogen gold rush has begun. What remains to be seen is who will unlock it first—and how quickly they can do it.
