EFSA Approves Safety of GM-Derived Enzyme for Starch Production After 2025 Evaluation
On May 19, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its latest safety assessment concerning a food enzyme—4-α-glucanotransferase—produced by a genetically modified strain of Bacillus subtilis. This enzyme is primarily used in starch processing.
According to EFSA’s expert panel on food enzymes, the enzyme presents no safety concerns under its intended use conditions. The findings were based on a comprehensive evaluation of the enzyme’s origin, manufacturing process, genetic stability, and potential for toxicity or allergenicity.
The positive opinion supports the ongoing authorization framework for GM-derived processing aids in the EU, reinforcing consumer protection standards while facilitating technological innovation in the food industry.
