Mitsui Eyes 2027 Spin-Off as Profit Pressures Mount on $Billion Green Materials Division
On May 30, Mitsui Chemicals revealed plans to spin off its Basic and Green Materials (B&GM) business unit by 2027, a strategic move aimed at transforming its petrochemical-heavy portfolio and accelerating a shift toward sustainable chemistry.
This decision aligns with Mitsui’s long-term vision, “VISION 2030,” which prioritizes growth in high-margin specialties like life sciences, mobility, and ICT, while restructuring its traditional materials segment. The company emphasized that its core chemical units face vastly different operational needs compared to its green-focused portfolio, requiring distinct business models and execution speeds.
The B&GM unit plays a pivotal role in Japan’s industrial infrastructure, supplying essential inputs to downstream sectors such as automotive and semiconductors. However, it is now under increasing financial pressure due to shrinking domestic demand and intensifying global competition from massive overseas chemical plants.
To stay competitive, Mitsui is actively scaling down naphtha cracker operations and improving performance in key product segments like phenols and polyolefins. Yet, these internal efforts are not enough. The company is now seeking external partnerships, resource integration, and technology sharing to build a self-sustaining entity capable of withstanding market turbulence and becoming a leader in green chemistry.
The potential carve-out would include units such as industrial chemicals, sustainable feedstocks, licensing operations, polyurethanes, and Prime Polymer Co., Ltd. Mitsui aims to turn these into a financially independent business with the flexibility to invest cash flow directly into innovation and eco-friendly transitions.
This upcoming split could not only redefine Mitsui’s identity, but also reshape the global green materials landscape—all while reinforcing Japan’s position in economic security and carbon neutrality goals.
