EFSA Confirms Copper Betaine Complex Effective for All Animal Feed
On June 5, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion confirming that the copper(II)-betaine complex is an effective nutritional feed additive for all animal species. The assessment was conducted by the FEEDAP Panel at the request of the European Commission.
The evaluation highlighted that the copper(II)-betaine complex is a bioavailable source of copper, making it suitable for all animal diets. A new efficacy study on fattening chickens demonstrated the additive's effectiveness, reinforcing its use in animal nutrition.
Key findings include:
- Safety: The additive is safe for target animals, consumers, and the environment when used within the maximum authorized copper levels in feed. However, it is classified as an eye irritant and poses skin and respiratory sensitization risks to users.
- Efficacy: The panel confirmed that the additive provides a reliable source of copper for all animal species, supporting growth and nutritional requirements.
This conclusion highlights the additive’s potential to enhance animal feed quality, while emphasizing the need for appropriate handling to mitigate user risks.
