Switzerland Revises Food Hygiene Regulations Tightens Listeria Standards Starting July 1
On June 12, 2025, the Swiss Federal Gazette published AS 2025 396, announcing amendments to food hygiene regulations. The new rules, effective July 1, 2025, introduce stricter Listeria monocytogenes microbiological standards for ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, with a transition period until June 30, 2026.
Key updates:
- For general ready-to-eat foods, the standard is set at n=5, c=0, m and M=100 cfu/g.
- For RTE foods intended for infants or special medical purposes, the standard is stricter: n=5, c=0, m and M=not detectable in 25g.
These measures aim to enhance food safety and protect vulnerable consumers. Food businesses have until mid-2026 to fully comply with the updated regulations.
