Nissan Chemical Targets 2027 Launch for Breakthrough Rice Herbicide Iptriazopyrid
Nissan Chemical Corporation, in collaboration with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), has unveiled a major breakthrough in the mode of action of the novel rice herbicide iptriazopyrid. The company aims to commercialize the product globally by 2027 and is accelerating its development efforts. Recently, the Indian government approved iptriazopyrid under the 1968 Insecticides Act, paving the way for its gradual entry into the Indian market.
Iptriazopyrid works by inhibiting 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), a key enzyme in carotenoid biosynthesis in plants. Through crystal structure analysis, researchers confirmed that the compound binds specifically to HPPD, delivering effective herbicidal action. Classified under Group 27 herbicides by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC), iptriazopyrid is positioned to be the first foliar-applied Group 27 herbicide for rice fields, making it a critical tool in combating resistant weeds.
The compound demonstrates exceptional selectivity, targeting barnyard grass and other major rice weeds without being metabolized by these species. In contrast, rice plants can rapidly break down the herbicide, ensuring high crop safety. This metabolic distinction is vital for tackling herbicide-resistant weeds, such as barnyard grass and sprangletop, which are increasingly challenging rice production worldwide.
Iptriazopyrid is particularly suited for direct-seeded rice systems, aligning with modern agricultural trends. Experts highlight its potential to reduce labor, conserve water, and lower methane emissions, offering a sustainable agriculture solution.
