Wojcicki Secures 23andMe with $305M Bid Regeneron Exits Auction
On June 16, 2025, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals announced it would not increase its bid for genetic testing pioneer 23andMe, which filed for bankruptcy in March. Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of 23andMe, regained control of the company through a $305 million offer, surpassing Regeneron’s previous $256 million bid.
The bankruptcy auction followed a 2023 data breach that exposed millions of customers' sensitive genetic information and a decline in demand for ancestry DNA services. Regeneron had initially proposed a new bid but required a $10 million breakup fee if Wojcicki’s offer prevailed.
Regeneron’s spokesperson stated that the company remains committed to advancing genetics-based healthcare through its Genetics Center and other platforms. Meanwhile, Wojcicki’s nonprofit TTAM Research Institute confirmed plans to uphold privacy policies and comply with data protection laws. The deal is expected to finalize after a court hearing on June 17, 2025.
