China Approves Benzene Futures and Options as Market Hits 2926 Million Tons
On June 20, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) announced its approval for the registration of benzene futures and options on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE). The CSRC emphasized its commitment to ensuring the smooth launch and stable operation of these financial instruments.
Benzene, a critical organic chemical raw material, connects upstream resources like petroleum and coal with downstream industries such as synthetic resins, fibers, and rubber. Its end-use products span across appliances, textiles, automobiles, and construction. As the world’s largest producer and consumer of benzene, China recorded a production volume of 25.13 million tons and an apparent consumption of 29.26 million tons in 2024, with a market value of approximately 208.6 billion yuan.
The DCE highlighted that the introduction of benzene futures and options will enhance the toolbox for chemical industry risk management, promote corporate growth, secure the stability of supply chains, and strengthen China’s influence on international pricing.
