New 60,000-Ton Chlor-Alkali Plant Revolutionizes MDI Production at Kumho Mitsui Chemicals

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals (KMCI) has taken a significant leap in enhancing its production of methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) with the implementation of Thyssenkrupp Nucera's cutting-edge e-BiTAC v7 electrolyzer technology. The newly operational chlor-alkali plant in Ulsan, South Korea, boasts an annual chlorine production capacity of 60,000 tons, enabling the company to reduce its reliance on imported raw materials and advance its sustainability goals.


This facility marks a major innovation in KMCI’s operations. The chlorine produced at the plant will directly support MDI manufacturing, a key ingredient in products like spandex, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), synthetic leather, adhesives, and coatings. By leveraging local chlorine production, KMCI is taking a step toward cost efficiency and supply chain independence.


In an environmentally conscious move, the plant also recycles byproduct brine from the MDI production process, effectively reducing waste and ensuring compliance with stringent wastewater regulations. KMCI's General Manager, Kwon Hyung Seob, emphasized, “The launch of this plant secures our independent chlorine supply for MDI production while reinforcing our commitment to environmentally friendly solutions.”


The project began with a pilot electrolyzer facility to test the feasibility of reusing the brine. Following its success, Thyssenkrupp Nucera was awarded the engineering and procurement (EP) contract in 2021 to design and supply the full plant. Shigeta Akira, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera Japan, highlighted, “Our advanced electrolyzer technology is once again proving its ability to improve production processes and minimize environmental impact.”


This collaboration not only strengthens KMCI’s position as a global leader in polyurethane manufacturing but also sets a precedent for sustainable innovations in the chemical industry.
