Four Global Companies Unite to Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Biomass and Waste

ECHEMI 2025-07-07

Honeywell (USA), Johnson Matthey (UK), Gidara Energy (Germany), and Samsung Engineering (Japan) have announced a strategic technology alliance aimed at developing an innovative solution to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biomass and municipal solid waste. This initiative will help countries meet the rising demand for SAF while enhancing energy security.

Leveraging the combined expertise of these companies, the solution is expected to reduce SAF feasibility study and facility launch timelines by over 15% while cutting capital expenditures by 10%.

Each company will contribute its specialized skills:

  • Gidara Energy will focus on converting raw materials through its gasification and syngas production expertise.
  • Johnson Matthey will provide cutting-edge catalysts and technology to transform syngas into fuel.
  • Honeywell will integrate advanced process technology and digital solutions.
  • Samsung Engineering will handle engineering, procurement, construction, and project management.

The collaboration aims to expand the use of syngas-based hydrogen production methods and promote the use of biomass and municipal waste as raw materials.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), by 2030, biofuels derived from waste and non-food crops are projected to meet over 40% of global biofuel demand, highlighting the critical role of this partnership in future energy solutions.
